I finally got around to watching the Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle pilots today. They frustrated me. They portrayed the struggle of balancing work and family as some unique battle that only these high powered women face. But isn't that something every women, every person faces? Especially when you consider that most families need two incomes. They don't have the luxury of having one parent stay at home, let alone enough money to hire help!

And of course there's a lot of sexism still in the world, but wouldn't it have been more powerful to show a world just a tiny bit better? Where maybe the women have to prove themselves a little more than the men, but, once they do, they're accepted. And maybe sometimes they miss their kid's ballet recital, but sometimes they miss the big meeting, too, and both of those are okay because they're human and life is full of sacrifices. And why can't they show these women in a real partnership with their husbands? Where maybe sometimes the husband resents the wife for having a better career and sometimes the women feels like she's held back, but they're able to talk about it and get through it together.

On Sex and the City, all of the women were fairly content with who they were. Maybe they wanted better love lives, but they were happy with their careers and they all managed to find a good balance between their career and their personal life. What also made it superior to either of these new shows, is that that balance was unique for each women. Charlotte got married and quit her job. Miranda had a baby and kept hers. Both of these decisions were perfect for them.

I know I'm taking this more personally than I probably should, but I'm a woman in a male dominated major, looking to go into a male dominated field, and I don't want kids and I'm not so sure about marriage. Where are the women like that? Where is the message that these choices are okay, too?
