You may have heard of a baseball player being stabbed to death? He was a Mariner. I liked Greg Halman a lot. Maybe my reasons weren't so great (he was Dutch! He also had a great smile, but they made me like him. I remember being excited over his first MLB home run.
Here and here and here (audio that starts playing automatically) are some local reactions. ETA: And this one. ETA2: Another one. (May add more in later as I come across them.)
More: Here, here (this is an especially good one), here and here.
Another good one.
Another one.

Anyway, I have other things I want to post about and I'm still not really around, but I wanted to talk about this. Hopefully, there will be a Yuletide squee/angst post when assignments go out.

Date: 2011-11-22 03:38 am (UTC)(Oh yes, we should talk about that! of course, some of my opinions boil down, "Well, I'm not really a fan, but I can't do anything about it and I'll get used to it," haha. And I love Verlander a lot, so was kind of happy on that level? Not sure he was the right choice, but I also disagreed with a lot of the arguments against him.)

Date: 2011-11-22 05:01 am (UTC)Meaning the "everyday player" argument, or the "Cy Young is the pitcher's MVP" argument? I'm an everyday-player argument proponent, personally. Also a Pedro-in-1999-for-MVP person. (Not that I remember him then, but his numbers were INSANE.) All of this is not to detract from Verlander's awesomeness! He was awesome.
I... don't even know where I stand on the wild card. I don't like the idea of a one-game playoff, or of the regular season meaning less - at the same time, though, I like that it's important to win the division? I don't know, I'm conflicted.

HA. Kind of both? My problem is that, as it stands right now, pitchers ARE eligible for the MVP, so I feel like we SHOULD consider them. That said, I do think we probably need two separate awards. I don't think it's fair to compare position players and pitchers. I've seen people suggest separate awards for each and then one overall MVP, but I'm not sure I even like that? They're just too different.
And something I've thought about a lot is how, in a lot of ways, I think there was no more valuable player to his team than Felix Hernandez was for the Mariners in 2010. Now, they lost 101 games, so that also bring in the whole "winning team" argument, BUT he was just THE reason to watch. He carried the Mariners much more so than one guy on a winning team does. I'm not sure if anyone would agree with me, but that's what I think about when people argue about what "valuable" means. (And maybe I'm saying they need to put some actual definitions out there for what "valuable" means.)
Yeah, I think it's good that it's important to win the division! But it sucks that it also means that potentially the team with the second best record has to play in a one game play off. And I know 15 teams in each league makes a lot of sense, but, gosh, I remember disliking interleague play when it first began. And now we're going to have it year round? (Also, I kind of liked the Mariners being in a four team division, hee! Less competition!)

I still don't like interleague play. And I wish they could figure out a way it didn't have to be all year round. Someone made a really good point - imagine if a contending team had to drop their DH for the last three games of the season because the schedule said so... it's so unfair! At the same time, I'm totally ignoring this because it doesn't start this season.
(Also, this is a good place to vent about how much I don't like Bud Selig. UGGHHHHH.)

Date: 2011-11-22 06:18 am (UTC)Oh wow, that IS a really good point! That could have a HUGE effect on the results and . . . huh, teams--in both leagues, really, but it does seem like it'll hit the AL harder--might have to really change how they construct rosters. They're going to have to think about things like that. And maybe eventually add the DH to the NL? (I can't see them eliminating it.) (And yeah. It's still a while off and we kind of knew it was coming, so I'm okay with ignoring it for now!)
(YEAH. I just don't know.)
