So, one of the things in Mariners fandom is that the front office is so good at keeping secrets that you generally don't hear about trades until they happen AND, if you hear about something, there's a good chance it's really going to happen. The Pineda/Montero trade is an awesome example of it as very little time passed from the first hint until all the details were known. (As [livejournal.com profile] beth_shulman pointed out, it's REALLY amazing that word didn't leak on the New York side.)

The Pineda/Montero timeline. )

Of course, an alternative interpretation is this trade is taking a really long time, as it still isn't official!

I'm sad

You may have heard of a baseball player being stabbed to death? He was a Mariner. I liked Greg Halman a lot. Maybe my reasons weren't so great (he was Dutch! He also had a great smile, but they made me like him. I remember being excited over his first MLB home run.

Here and here and here (audio that starts playing automatically) are some local reactions. ETA: And this one. ETA2: Another one. (May add more in later as I come across them.)

More: Here, here (this is an especially good one), here and here.

Another good one.

Another one.

And here's a picture of my sister with him (she manages to meet lots of baseball players) )

Anyway, I have other things I want to post about and I'm still not really around, but I wanted to talk about this. Hopefully, there will be a Yuletide squee/angst post when assignments go out.

Marshall: Why ask a failed romance to come and watch your successful one? You know, it's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.

"Shelter Island," How I Met Your Mother

I'm so sad this still rings so true. Or rings true again, since last season wasn't bad. Today was the Mariners last game. And they lost. For the 101st time this season (they won 61). Their 100th loss was yesterday, so that was a great season.

It's the second worst record in MLB. They scored the least number of runs since the DH was introduced. And all kinds of other crazy similar stats that basically just say the Mariners are one of the most awful offensive teams ever.

On the bright side, Felix might really win the Cy Young and we have Ichiro. I used to love more players on the team, but now I'm thinking everyone over the age of 25 who's not Ichiro can just go away.

Also, the Padres lost and they were going to be my NL team. So now I'm lost. And I'm rooting for the Rays and the Rangers, but they're playing each other in the first round, so I'm not sure how that's going to work for me. I guess I can just cheer for every single play in those games?

Anyway. On that note.

[Poll #1627300]

So. Yeah. Now I need to go figure out what to do with the Mariners offseason. I know I complained a lot (and thanks for putting up with me!), but I'm going to miss them.

Whoa, what a baseball day.

CONGRATS ROY HALLADAY ON THE PERFECT GAME! He's so one of those pitchers who I feel like should throw one! (But if this is going to be the year of the perfect game/no hitter, can the Mariners have one? Please? We have a lot of really awesome pitchers. Oh, and let me clarify, I want a Mariner to throw one. I don't want one thrown against the Mariners.)

And the Indians player who got head in the head?

And then the Mariners lost on a walk-off grand slam against the Angels, but before I got to really mourn it, Kendry Morales--the player who hit the home run--hurt himself while celebrating. Sounds like he broke his ankle. And for all that the Angels are our biggest rivals, that's not something you want to see.
